Hydraulic Hose Guide: Standards, Pressure Ratings and Selection
Understand SAE 100R1/R2/R12/R13/R15, EN 853, EN 856 standards and pick the right hydraulic hose.
Hydraulic hoses are classified by **reinforcement type** (wire braid vs. spiral) and **pressure rating**.
## Wire braid hydraulic hose
- **1SN / SAE 100R1AT** — single wire braid, medium pressure (up to 21 MPa / 3000 PSI)
- **2SN / SAE 100R2AT** — two wire braids, high pressure (up to 28 MPa / 4000 PSI)
## Wire spiral hydraulic hose
- **4SP / 4SH (EN 856)** — four-wire spiral, very high pressure (up to 45 MPa / 6500 PSI)
- **R12 (SAE 100R12)** — four-wire spiral, high pressure
- **R13 (SAE 100R13)** — six-wire spiral, very high pressure
- **R15 (SAE 100R15)** — six-wire spiral, extreme pressure (up to 49 MPa / 7000 PSI)
## Compact and thermoplastic
- **1SC / 2SC** — compact versions of 1SN/2SN, smaller bend radius
- **R7 (SAE 100R7)** — thermoplastic, medium pressure, light weight
- **R8 (SAE 100R8)** — thermoplastic, high pressure
## Selection steps
1. Determine max working pressure (with 4:1 safety factor on burst).
2. Pick the smallest standard hose that meets it.
3. Confirm fluid compatibility (NBR tube for oil, FKM for high temp).
4. Choose size based on flow rate and acceptable pressure drop.
5. Verify bend radius fits your routing.
