Air Hose Guide: Compressed Air Hose Selection and Sizing
How to choose compressed air hoses by pressure, inner diameter and application.
Compressed air hoses are rated by working pressure (commonly 1.5, 2, 2.5 or 3 MPa) and standard (ISO 2398).
## Key selection factors
1. **Working pressure** — match to your compressor discharge pressure (typically 0.7-1.3 MPa, with 2-3 MPa hoses for high-pressure systems).
2. **Inner diameter** — 1/4" for light tools, 3/8" for general workshop, 1/2" and up for high-flow applications.
3. **Tube material** — oil-resistant NBR for compressors with oil lubrication; food-grade for packaging; EPDM for oil-free air.
4. **Cover** — abrasion- and ozone-resistant for outdoor / job-site use.
## Common air hose standards
- **ISO 2398** — rubber air hose (general)
- **ISO 2398 20 bar** — high-pressure air hose
- **ISO 2398 25 bar** — heavy-duty air hose
- **ISO 2398 30 bar** — very high-pressure air hose
